Perennial Astrology
Perennial Astrology is an integrated and unique approach to astrology that supports not only one’s psychological process but also ones spiritual development throughout life. It reinforces the idea that this integrated approach is beneficial on a regular basis as one engages in the challenges of life and focuses on energizing the positive aspects at hand.
What is unique to Perennial Astrology is the fact that it is based on the Perennial Path developed by transpersonal psychologist John Amoroso, Ph.D. The Perennial Path is grounded in 8 Aspects (Ways of Doing) that are necessary for psycho-spiritual development. Just as important are the 12 Attributes (Ways of Being) that support each Aspect.
It’s important to note that the Perennial Path is a reflection of the Perennial Philosophy first published by Aldous Huxley in 1944. This philosophy defines 4 principles.
Matter is a manifestation of the Divine Ground.
Humankind can experience the Divine Ground.
Humankind possesses a phenomenal ego and an Eternal Self.
Humankind’s purpose is unity with the Divine Ground.
Perennial Astrology addresses the Perennial Path in a way that enables the continuous process of creativity for humanity's sake as we move on our path while staying self-aware of our psycho-spiritual process and how it can open our personal evolutionary process.
In simple terms – we are all spiritual beings living in and maneuvering through the material world; consequently, in order to facilitate our course in life, it’s important to focus on the 8 Aspects and 12 Attributes which include the psychological and spiritual dimensions of life moving us to higher levels of consciousness.
The 8 Aspects or Ways of Doing include:
Physical Well-Being
Study
Self - Awareness
Creativity
Meditation
Transpersonal Awareness
Relationship
Service
A significant amount of attention throughout the process of Astrology readings is spent on the Aspect of Self Awareness and the positive and negative complexes that affect one’s engagement in their unique sense of Soul Purpose.
The 12 Attributes of the Perennial Path are ways of being or states of Unitive Consciousness that embrace the body, mind and soul. They are ways of looking at our material reality, and ways of acting within the realm of the spiritual.
The 12 Attributes or Ways of Being that have an impact on each Aspect include:
Mindfulness
Non-Attachment Interconnectedness
Compassion Respect Responsibility
Commitment Faith Honesty
Gratitude Joy
Creativity
We all come in with a unique sense of soul purpose and we also come in with positive and negative complexes that are all found in our astrological charts. Our work is to become self-aware of our complexes as well as our soul purpose. The idea is to be aware of our negative complexes and accentuate the positive ones as they circulate around our soul purpose. The negative complex can get in the way of evolving and can burden us through the course of life while our positive complexes can create openings towards transforming those challenges a negative complex can bring.
That's why Perennial Astrology is the most integrated astrological system because it emphasizes self-awareness within the aspects and attributes of the Perennial Path all of which are important in our evolution and development.
This astrological approach is unique especially as it relates to the evolution of consciousness. It involves a lifelong process that can provide integrated insight and support in guiding our psycho-spiritual process.
Each aspect of the Perennial Path in each astrological chart can indicate a channel to open people up to a spiritually grounded life.
I have incorporated “The Perennial Path” in my readings bringing the 8 aspects and 12 attributes included in the model. Each aspect and attribute can be found in the chart and the openings/challenges to each one can be deciphered in a meaningful way promoting movement towards a more purposeful life.
The purpose of my readings is to reveal psychological complexes which may effect and influence our behavior within relationships, not only with others, but more significantly, the relationship we have with ourselves. Unconscious drives are at the root of the complex, taking on a life of their own and in a sense “possessing us” at times. The discomfort we experience can lead to an inner-healing, guided by our ability to acknowledge what has triggered us, sometimes with the help of a therapist or counselor. This uprooting of unconscious drives and the healing process that may follow can lead to a greater self-awareness, moving us further towards psychological growth and therefore, our own spiritual growth. I have found that the astrological chart can be an effective tool for exploring where these unconscious drives/complexes may reside, where the openings may be and ultimately, where we can experience a soul level transformation.
When doing a reading, and as a counselor, I’d like to emphasize that it’s critical to have a therapist to refer clients to who are going through a particularly challenging time and may or may not have a history of some type of trauma. Even though I am trained in counseling, I don’t have the necessary skills to support a client who is going through a deep psychological process. During those times, I often refer my clients to a qualified therapist.
As an astrologer my method of interpreting the chart moves into two basic stages. The first stage is to look at the chart regarding the psycho-spiritual process revealed by the chart. That process includes the overlay of complex psychology to the chart itself. In particular the aspect of self-awareness is grounded in complex psychology that identifies positive and negative complexes. The aspect of self-awareness, as an astrologer, is a focal point for me when doing readings so astrology becomes an important tool for reaching a greater level of Self-Awareness.
The second stage is to look at the Aspects and Attributes that can be found in the houses as well as the planets that rule those houses. By looking at those parts of the chart we can then determine what the openings (positive complexes) and challenges (negative complexes) are. It's important to note, that a positive complex can enhance our soul growth, or it can stunt it as we take for granted our known talents and skills and not use them. By a similar process, a negative complex can bring about tremendous soul growth in one's lifetime, as challenges become opportunities for transformational change.
It’s important to mention that there is no specific point in the chart that identifies Soul Purpose. Astrology is far more complicated than that. The whole chart, the integration of the whole chart can give us a clue regarding the soul growth and soul purpose that the individual has come into this lifetime to work on. Only through dialogue with the client can we begin to clarify the meaning of the complexes that are revealed in the astrology. In other words, the whole chart is Karmic and the whole chart guides us to the potential discovery of one’s Soul Purpose.
